Greetings to all our brothers and sisters in Christ that were once bound by sin but have been set free by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate our freedom and God’s love for us right where we are!
My name is Donnie Ojemann, the Emancipated Inmate and Warrior Husband to my precious wife, Genie, reporting from the Mission Field. This month I would like to share a message with all our AFH Family concerning our responsibilities as individuals of the Church (body of Christ).
Below is an account of what Jesus began doing at the very onset of His Ministry – Making Disciples! Let’s begin the lesson with our core scripture:
Matthew 4:17-22 King James Version (KJV)
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And He saith unto them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him.
21 And going on from thence, He saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed Him.
First Jesus began to preach repentance in verse 17. Repentance means true sincerity of remorse to God in our hearts for the sins we have committed against Him. To ask for forgiveness of those sins, then turn away from them and obey/follow God’s Word.
Repentance was just the beginning; Jesus made it clear that we are to Make Disciples to follow after Him.
The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are full of how Jesus taught, preached and healed the sick – a living example of the Good News of The Kingdom of Heaven for the 12 Disciples and all of us that come after them. However, before Jesus ascended to Heaven (after His death, burial and resurrection), in case there was any doubt; He spoke clearly of our responsibility:
Matthew 28:18-20 New King James Version (NKJV)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
After Jesus was baptized – being led by the Holy Spirit, He drew 12 men to Himself to begin their Discipleship Training. You might wonder what kind of training Jesus gave?
We see it in Matthew 4:23 plainly listed: And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
I know right now there are many of our brothers and sisters out there saying, “But how do I make more disciples? I don’t know how?!”
Never fear, our loving and all-knowing Father God has foreseen this need and has given us everything we need in order to fulfill the Great Commission. Follow Jesus!
Jesus told us in John 14:12 (NKJV): “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”
You see Jesus went to be with the Father so that He could be in the most advantageous position in order to intercede for us and the Holy Spirit would be able to come and reside within us.
What a gift, when we believe in Christ and follow after Him, preaching, teaching, healing the sick and more will be our “works” to carry out. Not in and of ourselves but through Christ. So when we pray and ask believing in the name of Jesus – miracles will happen!
He continued on in John 14:13, 15-18, 25-26: “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”…
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.16 And I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you”…
25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
- Let Down Your Net = Repent and Follow God: Jesus called out to the hearts of men asking them to Follow Him. They were to stop living the way they always had (fulfilling the lusts of the flesh), repent of their sins and begin a New Life with Him.
- Love Christ = Walk in Power of the Spirit: When we love Christ with all of our heart, we will obey God’s Commandments, we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit giving us the Power to live an Abundant Life!
- Share the love of Christ = Make Disciples: When we are full of the Power and Love of God we cannot keep this Good News to ourselves! We will share our experiences (testify), we will teach and preach from God’s Word (The Bible), we will live a life that exemplifies Christ’s love for us!
