Hebrews 12:2 New King James Version (NKJV) looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Greetings my brothers and sisters in Christ, who may be currently incarcerated but free from bondage through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Donnie Ojemann here, the Emancipated Inmate reporting in with love from the mission field of prison.
This month’s message my Warrior Bride and I would like to share is “Keep Your Eyes on Jesus”. We’ve been delivered and set free from the bondage of our past sins and God does not want us to be recaptured and enslaved again to the very things His Son, Jesus Christ, died to free us from!
First He instructs us in His Word to not look back.
Luke 9:62 New King James Version (NKJV) But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
When we were born again we were made a “new creation” (II Corinthians 5:17) and are “partakers” of His “divine nature”. (II Peter 1:4) It is not Christ’s nature to look back upon the sins He already paid the price for. Christ’s divine nature is the nature of the Father.
Micah 7:19 New Living Translation (NLT) Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!
If our Father God and Christ the Son both choose to not look back at our old sinful life and we have the same divine nature, why should we? Looking back at the past is like making parole, stepping out of prison, turning back around and saying,
- “You know, that miserable old prison life wasn’t so bad. Do you think I can have my old bunk back?” or
- “Thanks Jesus for freeing me from the lusts of the world but I think I’d rather wear the shackles of death and destruction again.”
Some may be saying, “Yeah, sounds good Donnie but easier said than done!” My response to that is – No one said it was gonna be easy! God’s Word says:
Philippians 2:12 King James Version (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
But here’s the second part, the good part: God didn’t leave us defenseless but gave us EVERYTHING we need to overcome the lusts of the world.
2 Peter 1:2-4New King James Version (NKJV) 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
God already knows we can’t do it on our own – if we could then we would not need Jesus Christ as our Savior! He gave us a new divine nature (a propensity to be godly verse 4) and then equipped us to carry out that divine nature with all we need for “life and godliness” (verse 3).
How were we equipped, you ask? “Through the knowledge of HIM (Jesus) who called us to glory and virtue” (verse 3). We find in the Oxford Dictionary that virtue means – behavior showing high moral standards.
How again? Through the knowledge of Jesus! And what is Jesus? The Word made flesh, God’s Word! (John 1:1)
God desires for us to press forward and stand in the newness of our healing, our wholeness in Christ Jesus! The Apostle Paul voiced this truth in his letter to the church of Philippi:
Philippians 3:13-14 New King James Version (NKJV) 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Stand up, Fix your gaze upon Jesus and claim God’s precious promises! Realize that we are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!
We have found the strength to overcome through God’s love for us. Jesus died that we might live, we pray that during this Resurrection Celebration month you too will accept HIS love!
